The tree features a broad, irregular crown with dense, dark green needles in bundles of two, each needle ranging from 3 to 5 inches long. Its bark is initially gray and smooth, maturing into a thick, fissured, blackish-gray surface that provides a striking contrast to its foliage. In spring, it produces small, yellowish male cones and larger, oval female cones that mature to a grayish-brown and persist on the branches. Pinus thunbergii is highly tolerant of poor soils, wind, and salt spray, making it a popular choice for coastal plantings and erosion control.
