Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy, and the annual wine auction held at the Hôtel-Dieu is the primary wine auction of France. The building, a notable example of 15th-century Burgundian architecture, is a former charitable almshouse, having served as a hospital and refuge for the people of Beaune (the majority of whom were destitute).
