For many, lemongrass is one of the first oils that comes to mind in aromatherapy context. Out of 55 Poaceae grass varieties, two lemongrass species are widely sold: West Indian (Cymbopogon citratus) and East Indian (Cymbopogon flexuosus). West Indian lemongrass is typically used in foods, drinks, and flavorings, especially in cuisines like Chinese, Indian, and Thai. East Indian lemongrass, described here, is used in essential oil production and pharmaceuticals. Lemongrass has a lengthy history, with its earliest surviving reference from the 17th century Philippines and “fever grass” being a long-standing nickname in its native cultures for early uses.
