Palmarosa oil is said to have a ‘rosy’ or ‘woodsy’ smell, but its relations are beloved grasses like lemongrass and citronella. Its scientific name is similar to ginger grass, an oil which is occasionally used in aromatherapy. However, ginger grass is less popular than palmarosa. Other names for palmarosa include ‘rusa’, ‘rusha’, ‘rosha’, ‘Turkish geranium’, and the Ayurvedic term ‘rohisa’. The rose and geranium references in these names are because the oil was sometimes used to make adulterated versions of those oils. When left in the sun and mixed with a type of tree sap palmarosa becomes lighter and more rose-like; in fact, it is still sometimes used as a rose substitute in today’s scented products.
