Rose otto oil comes from the Damascena rose, named after the city of Damascus. For a time the rose market was concentrated in Persia and the city of Shiraz. Recognizing its value, Ottoman merchants began searching for areas with ideal growing conditions. They settled on a mountainous region of Bulgaria that has since become known as the ‘Valley of Roses’ and gained an unshakable reputation as the finest rose oil producer in the world. The Damascena rose is famous in cosmetics and is one of the most sought-after luxury perfume ingredients worldwide. While oils in aromatherapy and perfumatory come from the same region and have similar fresh-cut scents, the perfume industry uses rose absolute oil which goes through a solvent extraction process. Rose otto by contrast is steam distilled in a lengthy process using large quantities of roses due to the fragility of the petal. Roses could be called the original anti-depressant.
