Sweet orange is produced prolifically in the United States and Brazil but has unknown origins. Best known for improving skin, bringing about cheerfulness, and supporting the immune system, traditional medicines have long used it for acne and chronic stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is a treatment for colds, coughs, and digestion stimulation. Dried sweet orange rinds were once used to treat anorexia. In China sweet orange long symbolized good fortune, while in old Europe it was a sign of richness. The first literary reference to a generic orange came from the 500 BC Chinese book Yu Kung. The origin of sweet orange – now commonly just called ‘orange’ – is unknown, although the fruit does not grow wildly. It’s a cross between mandarin and pomelo, and may have been first cultivated in southwestern China or the Himalayas.
