Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded is a novel by Samuel Richardson, first published in 1740. It’s one of the earliest examples of the English novel and was a landmark in the development of the novel as a literary form. The story is told through a series of letters written by Pamela Andrews, a 15-year-old maidservant. After her mistress dies, Pamela finds herself the target of increasingly aggressive advances from her mistress’s son, Mr. B. Rather than give in, Pamela maintains her virtue, which Richardson presents as a kind of moral fortitude. Eventually, Mr. B reforms and proposes to her, and the second half of the novel shows Pamela rising in society and navigating her new role as his wife. Cover says Pamela in Four Volumes. Inside says In Two Volumes. This is Volume 1. Everyman's Library 683. Book is in good condition. Some damage to dust jacket. Printed in Great Britain.
