The three paintings that comprise the Reincarnation Triptych (1973), visually depict a transition away from the struggle against societal constraints that have historically been imposed on women, to a place of cultural and creative freedom. Three women from history are represented as symbols of the different stages of this process: Madame de Stael, a 19 th century novelist, philosopher, and political writer; feminist novelist, George Sand; and writer, Virginia Woolf. The paintings are intended to be displayed together so that as they are viewed from left to right, the rigid square form at the center of each painting gradually recedes into the background, while a radiant, organic form that pulses and vibrates with energy becomes more dominant.
