He is the older brother of esteemed fetish carver Esteban Najera.  Ruben carves small stand alone animals like lions, squirrels, foxes, hummingbirds, pigs, rabbits, bears, frogs, turtles and cats. He is also well known for carving individual animals like eagles, hawks, owls, bats and dragonflies. He works almost exclusively in antler and bone, with additions of coral branch to represent trees or inlays of turquoise in the eyes of the carvings
