To Face a New Morn

TO FACE A NEW MORN. oil on birch panel. 1 inch sealed birch on all sides. 24 x 20 panel 22 x 18 painting. wire mounted on back.  I first saw this awesome rock face above Moab in 2022. I’ve gone back several times since. Set high above the reservoir, this stone face stands as a guardian and a watcher, catching the dawn and holding the strings of tension as the sun and the moon hold their dance. I have returned and painted here several times. This is from a picture I took last year. I see in this piece a call to resiliency, the wildness in the eyes of a woman who has wept all night but rises to greet the morning, a hoisting of the pack to continue on down the trail, with eyes to the warming light of dawn.
