Chrysopsis mariana Maryland Golden-Aster

The bright yellow, daisy-like flowers of Chrysopsis mariana bloom from late summer well into autumn, complementing blue-purple fall asters. Commonly called "Maryland golden-aster," Chrysopsis mariana's late bloom makes it a much-needed late-season food source for butterflies and other pollinators. Chrysopsis mariana is native to much of the eastern United States, including Maryland, as the name implies. It can be found growing wild in open woods, grasslands, and along roadsides. Maryland golden-aster is a short-lived perennial that readily reseeds, with fluffy, silvery seed heads that float on the wind. This reseeding habit will perpetuate its presence in your pollinator or wildlife garden from year to year.
