Slaughter House 5 is a masterpiece about time and life and war crimes (and other things). This phrase “So it goes” is stated every time death is encountered in the story. Which is many times… more than 100. During the first dozen or so times we read it, the phrase comes across as a callous statement of the inevitability of death, a reminder of an uncaring universe. And it is that… As the book progresses however, and we find ourselves reading that line after every instance of death and dying, the words take on more meaning, they become a moment of reverence… A pause to contemplate death before moving on… A short prayer.
