The bigflower pawpaw is a shrub or a small tree with large, showy white flowers and edible fruits. It is endemic to the central and northern peninsula of Florida. It grows in sandy soil in scrub habitats such as pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub and coastal dunes. It can grow up to about 15 ft in height. It has upright stems and spreading, horizontal branches. Leaves are leathery, obovate and yellow-green or medium green. The flowers have 6 white petals and the inner petals have maroon, corrugated bases. Flowers appear from March through May, opening after the emergence of the current season's leaves. Another common name for this plant is the flag pawpaw.
