The Cross Beside The Baltic

In Friedrich's art, one can perceive a desire to recreate the experience of the divine in the earthly world, outside of traditional codes. The divine is often represented through a cross. It is a particular vision of nature and faith that the painter gives us. The landscape becomes the mirror of the soul, exploring the unknown lands of the unconscious and beyond. Romanticism can therefore be considered as an internalized vision of the world and oneself.
