The painting was stolen in February 1997, shortly before a special exhibition was scheduled at the gallery. In April 1997, Italian police discovered a high-quality fake in Ventimiglia, on the Italian-French border, in a package addressed to the former Italian Prime Minister. It is by chance that the painting was found by a gardener on Wednesday December 11, 2019 in a garbage bag, hidden in a ventilation hatch in a wall of the Plaisance museum.
