Analog controls don't provide the precision you need for many of the Atari 5200 digital-like games. Why do you think they abandoned analog controls after the 5200? Analog joysticks can have inconsistent control due to dead zones and snapback. The joystick may float between two digital fields, causing the character to receive the wrong directional input. There's too much throw on an analog stick and the feel is too mushy for it to be any use. It's not cost effective to produce with new parts. I attempted to design and Analog joystick in 2020 using both manufactured new parts (custom made POTS) and attempted to repurpose old 5200 joysticks. It was a tedious process and it was just not cost effective, so I chose an approach that just works for most Atari 5200 games.
