They had three-dimensional designs cast into the lock body, a special technique that involved brass casting and fabrication. The railroads used a variety of lock to secure railroad property. Switch locks were used to secure the track in the right position. The keys for these locks were guarded and the men were required to always carry them. Locks with the original patina can sell for hundreds of dollars. Today these locks are prized by collectors.
