While technically sporting some of Nirvana’s prettiest sounds yet — take its cello-laden finale, “All Apologies” — the rest of the record is a noise-blasted, teeth-baring rebuke of unhinged primal scream-core (“Tourette’s”) and distortion-pressed, soul-blackening gloom (“Heart Shaped Box”). While aesthetically and intentionally rougher-around-the-edges than its predecessor, it was a mega-hit all the same.
