DESCRIPTIONUmibozu (Japanese: 海坊主, "sea monk") is a spirit in Japanese folklore that lives in the depths of the sea and sinks ships. It is said that it appears during storms as a giant black monk and can capsize ships with a single touch. Sailors believe that the only way to save it is to offer it a bottomless barrel to distract its anger. Legends say that these are the souls of monks who died at sea, and now they take revenge on anyone who disturbs the peace of the ocean.
