The historical precursor to matcha, Diancha was the drink of choice in Song Dynasty China, and is what the Japanese monks who visited China to learn about Zen Buddhism would have encountered. Thus, we can safely say it inspired matcha! It fell out of favor in China as loose leaf tea became popular, but we and a few others are trying to bring it back!
