About- Big Apple Gourds are hard-shelled gourds that resembles apples and features mottled green and white speckled skin that dries to brown. They reach sizes of 6-8 inches in diameter and 4 inches across. When and Where to Plant- Direct sow 2/3 seeds per space / hill once soil temps have reached 70ºF. Prefers rich, loose, well-drained soils. Care and Harvest- Water well 1-2 times per week. Provide fertilizer based on soil test. For drying, harvest after fruits after they receive 2-3 frosts. Leaves, stems and fruit should all be varying shades of brown. Bottle gourds require a long drying time. Allow to dry for 3-6 months in an area with good ventilation. Discard any soft or rotten fruit. If mold begins to develop wipe off with a light bleach solution.
