Mecaforpeace.org The use of the watermelon as a Palestinian symbol started in 1967 after the 6 Days War, when the Israeli government made the public display of the Palestinian flag a criminal offense in Gaza and the West Bank. To get around this ban, people help up slices of watermelon and pictures of watermelon, because when cut open they display the colors of the Palestinian flag, red, green, black, and white.
