Owned by veteran, maverick sports team owner John Bassett, the Bandits had some of the highest attendance numbers and were known for their exciting style of play; "Bandit Ball". Bassett's previous foray into football had been as owner of the Memphis Southmen of the WFL. Actor Burt Reynolds had partial ownership in the team in the Bandits. Steve Spurrier served as head coach of the team in what was his first head coaching job. In 2022, the name was revived for the new USFL, but that team was not included in the merger with the new XFL that formed the UFL.
