The team was established in 1990 and played its home games at Knickerbocker Arena. The team is named for the popular Pontiac sports car. The Firebirds were very successful during their tenure in Albany. The Firebirds were one of the AFL’s best teams on the field. They won six division titles, made nine playoff appearances and won the 1999 Arena Bowl. The team relocated to Indianapolis in 2000. The Albany Firebirds rose from the ashes and returned in the third incarnation of the Arena Football League in 2024.
