By the early 1970s, local businessmen Brian Heekin and Bill DeWitt were spearheading the effort. Despite plans to build a state-of-the-art arena, the league was skittish on Cincinnati. Instead, Heekin and DeWitt accepted an invitation to join the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). Their brand new arena complete, the Stingers hit the ice in 1975.
