By the early 1970s, local businessmen Brian Heekin and Bill DeWitt were spearheading the effort. Despite plans to build a state-of-the-art arena, the league was skittish on Cincinnati. Instead, Heekin and DeWitt accepted an invitation to join the rival World Hockey Association (WHA).
