The Spurs had an agreement to become an NHL team for the 1976-77 season, however the deal fell through when the NHL decided to hold off on expansion. Instead the team accepted a deal to join the WHA for the 1975-76 season. The Spurs had poor attendance and rumors were the NHL would be moving another team to Denver to take the place the Spurs would have had.
