After moving to Detroit in 1994, the were renamed after the Dodge Viper in a sponsorship deal with Chrysler. Early in their history, the team set an IHL attendance record and beat a team of NHL all-stars during the lockout. A later publicity stunt included bringing a 69-year-old Gordie Howe out of retirement for one game. The Vipers were competitive in their early years and capped it off with a 1997 Turner Cup victory.
