The team was coached by hall of famer Slater Martin, but the lack of talent caused the Mavericks to finish last in attendance. Due to financial problems, the owner gave the team to the league and commissioner George Mikan began sending players to the Mavericks in hopes of improving them. With coach Slater being Mikan's former teammate with the Lakers, the moves were viewed poorly and Slater resigned. The team was sold and moved after the season.
