The team is named for the popular Pontiac sports car. The Firebirds were very successful during their tenure in Albany. The Firebirds were on of the AFL’s best teams on the field. They won six division titles, made nine playoff appearances, and won the 1999 ArenaBowl championship game. However, the team relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana in 2000. The Albany Firebirds rose from the ashes, though, and returned in the third incarnation of the Arena Football League in 2024.
