In 1978, the Cleveland Barons merged with the North Stars in an unprecedented move to save both clubs from dissolving completely. The team improved in the 1980's and made a finals appearance in 1991. Despite the success on the ice, the team was renamed and moved following the 1992 season.  In 2000, the expansion Wild were announced as the new pro hockey team in Minnesota.
