Unable to get the college field they were using expanded, they moved to New Orleans in 1984. There they drew huge crowds thanks to running back Marcus Dupree, who hailed from neighboring Mississippi. When the league announced a plan to move to a fall schedule for the 1986 season, the Breakers moved to Portland, Oregon. Over 25,000 fans attended their first game in Portland. The Breakers uniquely memorable "wave logo" helmet design followed them to each locale, as did head coach Dick Coury.
