Unfavorable terms in a proposed lease for Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto forced the team to set up shop in Ottawa. A box office flop in there, the team wound up in Toronto for the playoffs. Dubbed the Ontario Nationals for those games, the team was sold to John Bassett Jr. over that summer and renamed the Toronto Toros before the start of the WHA's second season. At first they played in Varsity Arena, before moving to Maple Leaf Gardens in 1974.
