When the WHL folded following the 1974 season, the team joined the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Roadrunners made the WHA playoffs in their first two seasons, but financial problems took a toll in the third year and were forced to trade away their best players. The team moved down to the Central Hockey League for the 1977-78 season, but folded after just a year in that league. Stars of the WHA Roadrunners included, Robbie Ftorek.
