They got off to a fast start as Connie Hawkins led them the first ABA Championship crown. Despite winning he league title, and solid attendance, the team moved to Minneapolis the following year. With poor attendance in its only season in Minnesota, the Pipers moved back to Pittsburgh. This time however, fan support waned as the city felt abandoned by the team.
