Due to their independence the team was able to sign players from Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, which other teams in the league were unable to do. In the mid 80's the Bees acquired 5 former MLB players who had struggled with addiction and had been blackballed from the league. This mix of former stars and NPB players brought the team national attention in the late 1980's.
