The team was quickly put together after funding for the planned San Francisco Sharks fell apart. Despite not being in the leagues plans originally, the Nordiques emerged as a top team in the league, winning the Avco Cup in 1976-77. In the late 1980's and early 1990's financial problems started to mount with Quebec City being the smallest market in the league. An additional problem was the inability to attract non-French-speaking players, with the city and team having little media in English. There were plans for an overhaul including new uniforms and logos for the 1995-96 season and a government bailout was proposed to keep the team. Ultimately this was rejected and the team was sold and relocated following the 1994-95 season. Hall of Fam
