In this work, Chagall painted himself and his beloved wife, Bella, flying over their native Vitebsk. In doing so, Chagall portrayed the most pleasant feeling in the world – the feeling of mutual love. When you don't feel the ground under your feet. When you become one with your loved one. When you don't notice anything else around you (not even a green goat). When you just fly with happiness. When Chagall began painting Over the Town in 1914, he had known Bella for five years. However, four of those had been spent apart. Chagall was the son of a poor Jewish laborer who loaded herring; Bella was the daughter of a wealthy jeweler. When they first met, Chagall was seen as a completely inappropriate candidate for such an enviable bride. Nevertheless, he went to study in Paris to make a name for himself.
