Antique Nihonto - Katana in Koshirae, Late Muromachi (400-500 years old) - NBTHK Hozon Attributed to Kaifu

This katana has been attributed to the Kaifu school by the NBTHK. Kaifu swordsmiths were active from as early as the Kamakura Period in Awa (modern day Tokushima).  The are descended from Yamato (modern-day Nara) tradition via the Naminohira school in Satsuma (modern-day Kagoshima). Many Kaifu swords fell into the hands of pirates who raided the Chinese coasts, and later influenced Chinese Chang Dao construction.
