A Handachi is a type of scabbard, or Koshirae, that is a transitional style between a Katana and a Tachi. The word "han" means half, and "dachi" means tachi. Handachi originally appeared during the Muromachi period when there was a transitional evolution between the two main types of swords (Tachi and Uchigatana/Katana). The sword was being worn more and more edge up when on foot, but edge down on horseback as the tachi was used for.
