IWC Compass "Safari" Nato Olive ref.3510 de 1978
Forty years ago, in 1978, IWC took a calculated risk. In search of new ways to survive as sales plummeted, IWC formed an alliance with Porsche Design, a company led by Ferdinand Porsche, son of the founder of Porsche automobiles who in 1963 designed and produced the Porsche 911, possibly one of the most iconic cars in history. Nearly 10 years later, in 1972, Ferdinand left the family company to found Porsche Design Studio and in 1978 designed and produced the first product of that alliance, the revolutionary IWC-Porsche Design Compass watch, which was produced mainly in black PVD-coated aluminum and in extremely limited quantities, in NATO Olive PVD coating.
