In 1989, the Explorer II saw its second reference update from the evolution of 16550 to 16570. This model had its caliber updated to 3185 and later to caliber 3186. The hour markers on the white dial were now outlined in a marked contrast of black gold instead of white, and the result is visually quite striking. The luminescence used in this reference was also updated over time: first tritium was used, followed by LumiNova and finally Super-LumiNova.
