Scandium metal ingot - one troy ounce - .995 bullion   Scandium was discovered by Lars Fredrik Nilson in and named for the Latin form (Scandia) of Scandinavia in 1879. Scandium is a very rare, lightweight, corrosion resistant metal that is stronger than aluminum and can be alloyed in small amounts to improve the properties of aluminum, particularly in aerospace applications. It is also used in high intensity lamps, laser systems, and solid oxide fuel cells. It is a transition metal but is also considered a rare earth metal as it is usually found with other rare earth elements and has similar properties. It is estimated that only about 2 tonnes of scandium is mined worldwide each year in the form of scandium oxide and that less than 100 pounds of scandium metal is produced worldwide each year.  It (and its family of rare earth metals) sits atop the British Geologic Survey's Risk list (see below link).   Inscribed on our ingots are the chemical symbol (Sc), purity (99.50%), weight
