Our Lady of Kibeho In November, 1981 a group of young girls at Kibeho College, a girls secondary school in Rwanda began to experience a series of Marian apparitions which have come to be called Our Lady of Kibeho. In these visions, Our Lady warned of a terrible war, and asked people to pray the even sorrows rosary. In 1994 terrible war did indeed come to Rwanda as civil war and genocide led to over a million deaths. The parish church in Kibeho was the site of one of these massacres. In 2001 Bishop Augustin Misago of the Diocese of Gikongoro in Rwanda recognized Our Lady of Kibeho as an authentic apparition of the Virgin Mary. This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different countries around the world.
