Our Lady of La Vang The apparition of Our Lady of Lavang appeared to Vietnamese Catholics in 1798. At that time, Catholics were being persecuted by the Vietnamese Emperor Cảnh Thịnh. Many Catholics had taken refuge in the rainforest of La Vang in Quang Tri Province. Each night these persecuted Catholics gathered to pray the rosary together. One night Our Lady of Lavang appeared as they prayed, taking the form of a young woman in traditional Vietnamese dress and carrying a small child, accompanied by two angels. Many of the Catholics had become sick while hiding in the rainforest, and Our Lady told them to boil the leaves growing on the trees, the resulting brew healed those who were ill. Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang is located in Quang Tri, Vietnam. This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different cou
