Cougar Cheese - WSU Creamery - Washington State University During the 1930s, the WSU Creamery was looking for different ways to store cheese. At that time, plastic packaging materials were not yet invented, and wax packaging was sometimes prone to cracking, which led to contamination. This led the Creamery to explore the use of cans as a storage option. One of the cheeses that resulted from this research was Cougar Gold, and the tradition of storing cheese in cans continues to this day. The mission of the WSU Creamery is to provide teaching and research opportunities to the university community and the dairy industry. Additionally, the creamery aims to offer excellent work experience to student employee and provide financial support to students and university operations.
