Artist: Oscar Joyo Title: Shell 2 Size: 5" x 7"  Acrylic on panels Dual Sense combines Oscar’s Afrofuturist portraiture with his love of anime. He pulls inspiration from WEB DuBois’ concepts of Double Consciousness; Black people have been seen through the perspective of another race, while also feeling torn between the duality of the African and the American. A majority of the pieces are panels with built-in magnetic backings and detachable magnetic pieces. The detachable pieces are painted as photo realistic faces and reveal the anime characters underneath. Other pieces have rips in the canvas to reveal a direct view of the subject's hidden layer. These works bring a tangible and kinetic quality to Oscar's work. Oscar hopes to display the challenge of balancing the various identities of oneself and having their existence accepted without compromise.
