A Fine Egyptian Wooden Standing Dignitary Figure, Middle Kingdom, 11th - 12th Dynasty, ca. 2030 - 1802 BCE
A graceful and remarkably well-preserved wooden figure of an Egyptian dignitary, carved with quiet dignity and balance. The man stands upright with one arm at his side and the other, now lost, once raised in an attitude of respect or offering. His features are finely rendered: high cheekbones, almond eyes, and a calm, assured expression that reflects the self-possession of a nobleman. The slender body and subtle contouring of the chest and abdomen show the sculptor’s sensitivity to natural form, while the closely-cropped wig and wraparound kilt retain the elegant simplicity of this period. Tenons below the feet originally secured the standing figure to a separately made base, ensuring it could be displayed, thus emphasizing the figure's importance.
