A Published Greek Terracotta Protome of a Goddess, Classical Period, ca. 5th century BCE
This finely molded terracotta protome depicts a goddess shown frontally, her features modeled with remarkable sensitivity. Most of the original white slip remains, creating a soft background for the traces of added color. Her face is serene, characterized by large, almond-shaped eyes, a straight and elegant nose, and gently arched lips that display the subtle Archaic smile. A faint dimple marks her strong chin, adding definition to her expression. She is dressed in a chiton, and her hair is beautifully arranged beneath a low, flaring polos. The centrally parted strands are swept up over the ears and fall in long, ribbed plaits along the shoulders. The overall effect is harmonious and refined, exemplifying the high quality of Archaic votive terracottas. Protomoi, such as this example, were primarily associated with sanctuary rituals rather than funerary practices.
