Vamos a la mar Grade Level: 5th grade Lesson Objective: Students will be able to play the xylophone, bongos, and metallophone with accuracy to accompany a traditional Guatemalan folk song. Materials/Resources: Metallophones Xylophones Bongos Mallets Smartboard Procedures & Instruction: I taught this lesson during hispanic heritage month. Discuss with students the significance and purpose of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage month is when we celebrate and honor the cultures and contributions of people who have roots in Spanish-speaking countries. It starts on September 15th and lasts until October 15th every year.  Perform the song by yourself from beginning to end. Then, teach the song to the students phrase by phrase. Repeat phrases that need extra practice. Review classroom instrument rules and basic mallet playing technique. (pinch, roll, and wrap) Transition students to the instruments.
