The Sauber-Mercedes C9 was developed based on the previous C8, but some chassis modifications and aerodynamic changes were done to improve the race car. In 1989 the C9 received the new M119 motor that was 8.4 liters, and now had aluminum heads instead of steel heads. The Sauber-Mercedes C9 would on to finish the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans in first, second, and fifth place.
